City Road Garden Associations

City Road Allotments is an Association managed site in the west end of Dundee, with members from all parts of the city. There are 78 plots of varying sizes providing accessibility, to grow fruit, flowers and vegetables. There is a Communal hut including kitchen facilities which members use to meet and hold events and a shop for purchasing supplies. Members hold annual events open to the public and provide donations of surplus produce to the local community from a basket at the main gate.

Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design

At one point, the largest art school in Scotland, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design is the creative heart of the University of Dundee, and has been producing outstanding graduates for over 100 years. Comprised of two complex, contrasting buildings, the school itself is an extraordinary architectural time capsule, and as it has grown to accommodate increasing student numbers, the buildings have morphed to follow bold new architectural ideas. Housing an astonishing range of creative facilities largely hidden from public view, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design – or DJCAD, as it is more commonly referred to – is as extraordinary on the inside as it is on the outside.

Located in Dundee’s West End, the building is listed and provides a spacious gallery on the ground floor. Dundee Art Society is owner of this ground floor and garden since the late 1940s. James McIntosh Patrick was keen on its purchase. Formed in 1890 the society has had many well know artists as members and is still thriving today.

Dundee Congregational Church

Dundee Congregational Church is an Independent Church that was designed by the architect James Brewster, and opened in 1833. Known as the Cathedral of Congregationalism in Scotland, the building is unusually ambitious for its date and has been in continuous use as a place of worship since it opened. The building maintains strong spiritual and social associations with the local community through the congregation and through the use of the building by various community groups.

Dundee Historic Environment Trust

Dundee Historic Environment Trust is an independent charitable organisation, supported by Dundee City Council and Historic Environment Scotland. The venue is our city centre office. We provide grant assistance towards the appropriate repair of historic buildings in Dundee city centre and towards projects that provide opportunities to learn about and enjoy Dundee’s historic built environment, particularly community heritage projects. The Trust also provides best practice advice on the maintenance and repair of historic buildings. We work partnership with other organisations to deliver events, talks and workshops and we contribute to the Dundee Heritage Walk Programme.

As a leading force in Scottish theatre, Dundee Rep Theatre has created a number of award-winning and award-nominated productions, including the world premiere of Let the Right One In, The Cheviot, The Stag and The Black, Black Oil, the Scottish premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning August: Osage County, the world premieres of new musicals No Love Songs and Oor Wullie and the 80th Anniversary season world premiere of Peter Arnott’s Tay Bridge. Over the course of nine decades, Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre has been at the heart of performance in Scotland, and grown into a world-class organisation, with two artistic forces based in Dundee, travelling to and reaching the rest of the world.

Gilfillan Memorial Church

Named in honour of Dundee Minister George Gilfillan, a beloved pastor to the city (especially its jute mill workers) and fierce advocate for the abolition of slavery. We seek to provide a Christian witness of compassion, service, and love to the Dundee area and beyond, staying true to our motto “Here let no one be a stranger.”

HMS Unicorn

At almost 200 years old, HMS Unicorn is one of the world's most remarkable historic ships and the last surviving wooden warship left in Scotland. Built for the Royal Navy and launched in 1824, HMS Unicorn is now preserved as a historic ship and visitor attraction in Dundee. As one of the world's six oldest ships and with four atmospheric decks to explore, HMS Unicorn is great fun for all the family and suitable for all ages. So come aboard and step back in time to learn about life at sea, the history of the Navy in Dundee and warships in ‘the Golden Age of Sail’.

Meadow Mill Studios

Meadow Mill in the Blackness area of Dundee is home to a dynamic community of over 90 artists, makers and designers. The largest studio facility of its kind in the region, Wasps has had a presence at Meadow Mill since 1986. Across three floors of the building, there are 58 artist studios and a Project Space used for exhibitions and workshops. Among those based at Meadow Mill are ceramicists, painters, textile workers, printmakers and sculptors. Formerly known as North Dudhope Mill, the building was opened in 1874 by Urqhuart Lindsay and Co., with around 500 people working there at the peak of Dundee’s textile boom. This jute mill specialised in the spinning and weaving of jute before it was sent on to be used in the city’s other flourishing industries; whaling, fishing and shipbuilding.

St Margaret's Episcopal Church, Lochee

St Margarets Episcopal Church was built in 1890 and served the population of Lochee and Ancrum Road. The building has several features of historical interest, including a marble font, a Flemish pulpit, a war memorial to local soldiers and an organ. The building has a church, gardens and church hall. It is regularly used by the congregation but also by those of other faiths. The church hall is open for use for exercise and other classes as well as a social venue for parties and meetings.

A House of Prayer has stood on this site from about 1150. The church as it now stands was built in 1453. The church contains unique Pre-Reformation paintings of national significance being amongst the earliest known paintings in Scotland.

St Mary Magdalene's Scottish Episcopal Church

St Mary Magdalene’s Church is an active place of worship and a member of the Scottish Episcopal Church. The building has been a place of worship since 1867 when it was originally a Catholic Apostolic Church. In 1952 it became St Mary Magdalene’s Scottish Episcopal Church after the congregation moved from their previous building which opened for worship in 1854.

St Mary’s was built in 1858, designed by George Gilbert Scott in the Victorian Gothic style. The reredos, designed by Sir Robert Lorimer, is an important example of the Scottish Arts and Crafts movement.

St Peter's Free Church of Scotland

St Peter’s Church was built in 1836, a simple classically proportioned building on an East West axis with a stone tower and spire on St Peters street. The building which was refurbished in 2009, has a well-lit interior with a three sided gallery on cast iron columns and two arts and crafts stained glass windows on the West end flanking the central platform (previously a raised pulpit, and organ). It was designed in the reformed tradition with the emphasis on hearing the Word of God.

St Salvador's Scottish Episcopal Church

One of his few works in Scotland, St Salvador’s was designed by one of Britain’s foremost Gothic Revival architects, G. F. Bodley in 1868. Glorious painted interior, one of the most significant of the 19th century Gothic Revival in Scotland. Stencilled decoration to the walls and ceiling, the splendour and richness increasing in the chancel and apse. The nave is predominantly green with cream above; the chancel a warm red and the reredos is rich with gold. The eye is drawn to the brightly coloured and gilded screen and beyond to the high altar and reredos. The magnificent panelled and painted reredos fills whole of the east wall and has a central figure of Christ crucified and 18 painted copper panels of the Apostles, Angels, the Virgin and St John with a painting of the Annunciation above. Organ by Wadsworth & Maskell, 1882, with an elaborate and richly carved and highly coloured case.

Stobswell Trinity Church of Scotland

Built in 1840, this church is set within a small garden which has become an oasis of calm and beauty within a busy urban setting. The interior of the church sanctuary is surprisingly spacious and manages to combine traditional architecture and modern installations in an attractive way. The large stained-glass window, decorative pillars, organ pipes and balcony are worth seeing.

Tower Foyer & Lamb Galleries, University of Dundee

The Tower Building is one of the most recognisable buildings on the University of Dundee’s city campus. Designed in 1958 by architects Robert Matthew Johnson-Marshall, it reflects their interests in developing a vernacular-inspired Scottish modernist style. Although modern in form (predating Dundee’s later enthusiasm for multi-storey tower blocks) it was built from traditional stone and wood. It opened in 1961 with the extension following in 1968.
