Shetland Amenity Trust is a charity with the mission to safeguard, enhance, and promote Shetland's heritage, ensuring it is accessible to be enjoyed by all. We deliver a wide range of initiatives to protect and interpret Shetland's heritage, promoting both physical and intellectual access.
We operate public sites at Sumburgh Head, Lighthouse, Nature Reserve & Visitor Centre, Old Scatness Broch & Iron Age Village, Shetland Museum & Archives and the Shetland Crofthouse Museum, and the Trust’s main office at Garthspool, Lerwick, located in a renovated ice factory, is headquarters of the Trust’s natural and cultural heritage teams.
Shetland Amenity Trust’s work fits closely with the themes Revive, Resist and Reimagine. This event will show how we are placing value on oral histories and traditions relating to place-names, recording a fragile resource at risk of loss through changes to the landscape and how we interact with it. We interpret and promote the names and associated stories to ensure new audiences can learn more about Shetland’s heritage. Our work promoting and protecting Shetland’s rich natural heritage, including flora, fauna, habitats and geology includes conservation of native, relict and endemic vegetation, propagation of suitable tree stock, restoration and re-establishment of peatland and native trees in Shetland and providing guidance to communities on how they can make a difference to threats like climate change.
This open afternoon will provide the opportunity to meet heritage professionals and view displays about the Trust’s work in safeguarding, sharing knowledge about and promoting aspects of Shetland’s natural and Cultural heritage.
This includes the Natural Heritage team’s work raising awareness of and helping safeguard Shetland’s biodiversity and geodiversity, through initiatives such as biological recording, tree planting, propagation and peatland restoration.
You will also learn how we are capturing place-names and community stories to preserve an important aspect of Shetland’s heritage which is of great value for understanding the history and geography of the isles and the people and species found here and the languages spoken.
