St Mary's Kirk, Hawick

Scottish Borders

In Person
2026 Theme

Situated in the centre of the town of Hawick upon a grassy knoll, there has been a church on this site for over 800 years. Friends of St Mary's is a community group who are purchasing the Kirk in order to transform it into a living memory museum.

Friends of St Mary’s has raised funds to purchase St Mary’s Kirk in Hawick from Church of Scotland. A Church has stood in this iconic spot for 800 years. Not only has the group secured a future for the building, so it does not fall into disrepair, they plan to open the building to the community as a Living Heritage space where the history of Hawick is told by its own. Inviting people to come and record their memories of Hawick and share memories and stories of their ancestors. Every historic building tells two stories. One is written in stone. The other lives in the memories of the people who have passed through it. This project will conserve both. The place where Hawick tells its own story.

We will be hosting an open day to let members of the community know about our plans for the building and to invite them to come and share their memories.
