Stornoway Historical Society

5 September 2026 (10:00 - 16:00)

Outer Hebrides / Na h-Eileanan Siar

2026 Theme
In Person

SHS is presenting a walk-around exhibition of vintage postcards. Enlarged images of the cards will reconnect visitors with the landscapes, streetscapes, buildings, and natural environments of Stornoway and the Hebrides in days gone by. The handwritten messages on the reverse provide unique records of oral history and everyday communication in days before the widespread use of digital media. The exhibition will take place at the SHS premises in Stornoway Town Hall, where volunteers will welcome visitors and answer questions.

The exhibition links to the Doors Open Days 2026 theme by highlighting the importance of recording oral histories and preserving evidence of the community’s physical and cultural heritage, and also to encourage reflection and discussion on how local landmarks can be protected, conserved, and sensitively adapted for future generations.
