Kinloch Historical Society

Kinloch Historical Society (KHS) was formed on 06 December 1983. We are a volunteer run organisation whose purpose is to collect, record and promote the heritage and genealogy of the Kinloch area on the Isle of Lewis for future generations. KHS is situated at the old school, Balallan, which has been developed as a community hub and offers a wide range of services: two museum rooms, archive, heritage store & workshop, café, charity shop, conference space, and launderette.

Mangersta Shieling

Mangersta Shieling is a traditional stone built shieling/airigh that was renovated by Uig Development Trust to use for overnight stays. It is a 15 minute walk from the road across the moor. It has a separate compost toilet. Uig Development Trust is a charity that promotes sustainable community development in Uig.

St Columba’s Ui Church / Eaglais na h-Aoidh

St Columba’s Ui Church is a beautiful medieval church located at the eastern end of the Braighe. It is one of the most important archaeological sites on Lewis and is the burial place of Macleod chiefs of Lewis who controlled the island for many years. It is one of the few and most complete remains of the medieval and post-medieval period on Lewis. The church and graveyard are under the care of Urras Eaglais na h-Aoidhe, a group of local volunteers.

Stornoway Historical Society

Founded in 1992, Stornoway Historical Society has around 250 members, including subscribers worldwide. We engage the public through exhibitions, open days, a twice-yearly magazine, annual winter lectures, talks to community groups, and online through the SHS website, Facebook, and YouTube. The society is based in modest premises within Stornoway’s historic Town Hall, in the heart of the town. The committee meets there regularly, and members meet twice a week to plan events, exhibitions, and publications, and to welcome visitors from near and far, with many researching their ancestry. Stornoway’s new deepwater port has brought more cruise ships to the town in recent years, increasing visitor numbers to the SHS premises.

Pàirc Historical Society (Comunn Eachdraidh na Pàirc) is the local historical society for Pàirc in South Lochs. The Historical Society is run entirely by volunteers. Its work includes the care of records and publications relating to the history of Pàirc, the organisation of talks and events, and shared management of Ravenspoint Museum, which provides a public focus for local history.
