Bridge of Allan Well House Restoration Project

The 1821 Category B listed Well House in Bridge of Allan hides a history of both the exploitation of copper ore and mineral water, and is one of the earliest surviving buildings associated with the spa town of Bridge of Allan

This little building and the resultant Hydropathic Spa contributed to the success of Bridge of Allan creating the town you can see today.

The Well House was completely renovated by volunteers from a Building at Risk in 2020, now completed. Internal works are still underway.

We will be running informative tours of the inside of the Well House including the headframe and a chance to look down the mine shaft. These will run regularly during the day. 

We will have mining related artifacts in the garden area and display about the mineral waters. We have ex miners who volunteer with the project who will be available to answer questions

Eco Museum Trail covering the Airthrey Copper Mine

These guided walks will run from the Well House

They will cover the Eco Museum Trail

Walks are medium difficulty on sloping paths. Walking boots and outdoor clothing are recommended depending on weather.

 

The walk traces the underground workings of Airthrey copper mine at the surface and tells the story of both the extraction of copper through to the discovery of the mineral waters that led to the development of Bridge of Allan as a Spa town.

 

The route covers both woodland and urban environments, with an optional circular or linear extension to visit Wolf Hole Quarry. The main route can be broken into two sections upper and lower and the total distance is around 3.5 km (just over 2 miles).  There are some very steep sections on both routes. The upper route is mostly wooded with some steps and footpaths with unprotected sheer drops. It can be muddy and slippery after rain. Stout footwear is recommended. There are no gates or stiles. The route is not suitable for bikes, buggies and wheelchairs.

Additional Access Information

There is a small step into the building. Sensible shoes are recommended due to undulating ground. 

There is limited wheelchair access to the rear garden area but the ground is shingle and slate.
