St Columbkille’s Church has touched the everyday lives of thousands of Roman Catholic Christians and parishioners of the Diocese of Motherwell. It has served the local community of Rutherglen for decades and its prominent position on the Main Street of Rutherglen is reflective of its standing and importance to the town. Its central location has also resulted in a strong association with the building by those who do not frequent the church.
In addition to its significance as a community asset, the church is a fine example of work by one of Scotland’s most celebrated 20th century architectural practices: Gillespie, Kidd & Coia. Designed in the years preceding the Second World War (1934-40), St Columbkille’s is an early example of the distinctive modern ecclesiastical architecture which Gillespie, Kidd and Coia famously produced.
The Church building will be open for visitors from 11am - 3pm. There will also be guided tours at 11:15am, 12:15pm, 1:15pm and 2:15pm.
