Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life is a 22-acre open air museum, with nine buildings, two Scheduled Monuments and sits within the Coatbridge Conservation Area. Visit the adventure play park to burn off energy, discover the story of Lanarkshire’s industrial past and explore 20 acres of outdoor space. For Doors Open Days join us for a tour:

 

  • Tour of the Industrial History Store, 11am 

See behind the scenes where the museum’s big machines are stored and see some of our recent acquisitions!  

Approx. 30 minutes. Meet at the museum reception.  

 

  • Guided Canal Walk, 2pm  

Explore the history of the Gartsherrie Branch of the Monkland Canal, now a Scheduled Monument, with the Industrial History Curator.  

We will find a Second World War air raid shelter, discover rope marks left by the canal barges, explore a Victorian ironworks and see how coal was transferred from Lanarkshire’s first railway to the canal.  

The walk will last approximately 45 minutes; meet at the museum reception.
