MMCC Bonnyrigg Mosque

The former Bonnyrigg library is unusual among Carnegie libraries because of its grey harled exterior, rather than the more commonly used exposed stonework. Sandstone detailing around the doors and windows provides an attractive contrast. The building was designed by the Edinburgh architectural practice Greig, Fairbairn and MacNiven, who used a similar architectural style for the nearby Parish Council offices, opened in 1909.
Over the years, the building has also served important civic and community purposes, including use as a town hall, a venue for councillors’ surgeries and a flexible public meeting space.
Today, the building is home to the Midlothian Muslim Community Centre, commonly known as MMCC Bonnyrigg Mosque. It serves as a place of worship and as a welcoming community centre for people from Bonnyrigg and the wider Midlothian area. Alongside daily prayers, the centre supports religious education, youth development, family and welfare services, charitable initiatives and wider community engagement. The building continues its original tradition of public service by bringing people together and supporting the educational, social and spiritual needs of the local community.

Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the mosque, view exhibitions, listen to short presentations and learn more about its role, activities and place within the local community. Members of the community will be available to welcome visitors and answer questions in a friendly and respectful setting. Refreshments will also be provided.
The event is informal and operates on a drop-in basis. Visitors are welcome to stay for a short visit or spend longer exploring the building and meeting members of the community. Everyone is welcome.
