Welby & Wright Tileworks is an independent working ceramic studio in Edinburgh specialising in the traditional manufacture, conservation and restoration of handmade encaustic tiles and mosaic. It is a private working studio, not normally open to the public, where historic craft techniques are combined with contemporary design and technology.
Visitors are invited into the working studio of encaustic tile maker Craig Peebles and mosaicist Andrew Little, both QEST Scholars, to discover two endangered heritage crafts being practised today.
The open studio will combine informal demonstrations, discussion and opportunities to see the tools, materials and processes involved in making handmade encaustic tiles and mosaics. We will explore the historic relationship between these crafts and Scotland’s architecture, as well as their potential future within contemporary settings.
The event directly reflects the 2026 theme Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine. We will revive endangered making skills by bringing them into public view; resist their disappearance by keeping them actively practised; and reimagine their role by exploring how traditional encaustic tile and mosaic can contribute to contemporary architecture and design. The event presents heritage not simply as something to preserve, but as something we can continue to make and develop.

The front of the property has 2 steps. Thus making the front of the property have limited access however there is level access via a permanent ramp at the side entrance.
