Victorian Schoolroom - History of Education Centre at The Heart of Newhaven

26 September 2026 (11:00 - 15:00)

Edinburgh

In Person
2026 Theme

The History of Education Centre, aka the Victorian Schoolroom, is based in what was, until four years ago, the oldest working primary school in Edinburgh (the oldest areas date back to 1844). The school was bought on behalf of the community to revive it as a  community hub rather than allowing it to be redeveloped into flats or demolished. As such, the integrity of the Victorian school has been preserved and is being re-used to benefit all. One of the old classrooms has been painstakingly taken back to the Victorian era and filled with period classroom furniture and appropriate school equipment. Another has been transformed into a heritage/museum space, featuring Victorian tenement homelife in the days before electricity, as well as displays of old educational collections and equipment.

There will be short, Victorian style lessons taking place throughout the day, depending on numbers. The Victorian homelife and school equipment exhibitions will be open. Some of the other creative partners based in the building will be opening their studios to visitors.
