In Person

The Catholic Chapel of St Albert the Great is located in the peaceful garden of a 1766 townhouse on the west side of George Square. It offers a place of worship, serving the spiritual needs of students and staff at the University of Edinburgh.

The limited palate of materials – wood, glass, stone and corten steel – deliberately echo the simplicity of the chapel upstairs. Structural glass gives the illusion of an open space beyond the altar while the corten columns and masonry wall apertures create an appropriate balance between enclosure and openness for a space designed for liturgy, prayer and contemplation.

The oak roof structure contains engineered timbers fabricated from timber waste products. A sedum-covered roof provides insulation, reduces water discharge and provides a new habitat for garden wildlife.

Visitors are invited to experience the peace and contemplation of the Chapel and garden on Saturday and Sunday afternoons during Doors Open Days.

An audio guide of the plants in the garden, each of which reference the stations of the cross, is accessed by a QR code in the garden.
