Designed by Archibald Elliot in the neoclassical style in the 1820s, originally opened as Broughton Place church in 1821 before conversion to an auction saleroom in 1999, 33 Broughton Place is the winner of several architectural design awards. Now the historic HQ of UK auctioneers, Lyon & Turnbull, a firm who have been part of Edinburgh's history for 200 years.
On exhibition will be an important private collection of Scottish art, Darkness & Light: Post-War and Contemporary Art in Scotland, ahead of its auction on 30th September 2026.
The collection is an exploration Scotland’s visual arts scene over the last seven decades from The Two Roberts, Alan Davie, Sir Eduardo Paolozzi and Joan Eardley to the plethora of talent that emerged from Glasgow School of Art from the 1980s onwards under the leadership of Alexander Moffat - including Steven Campbell, Peter Howson, Ken Currie, Adrian Wiszniewski and the later generation of Alison Watt, Stephen Conroy and Paul McPhail.
Chronologically, it concludes with the remarkable years when Glasgow remained a hotbed of creativity, nurturing the talents of David Shrigley, Douglas Gordon, Christine Borland and many more.
