Deaf Action exists to support the diversity of deaf people, including deaf users of British Sign Language (BSL), and those who are deafened, deafblind or hard of hearing. Our work is geared towards empowering all deaf people to achieve their potential and fully participate in society, with equality of rights, access and opportunity.
Founded in 1835 by Alexander Blackwood, Deaf Action, then known as the Edinburgh Deaf Benevolent Society, was established at a time when Edinburgh was a pioneering city in deaf education and welfare, and the building on Albany Street holds that rich history in its walls.
This Doors Open Days, tours will include a special visit to the Scottish Deaf Archive. Holding over 200 years of Scottish deaf history and run by Deaf History Scotland, the archive gives visitors a rare chance to see treasures relating to Deaf Action and Edinburgh's deaf heritage. Also on special display: a newly reproduced copy of Deaf Action's original founding constitution, generously shared for this event by the National Library of Scotland, where the document is held.
After your tour, enjoy refreshments and browse the Brennan Library, Scotland's largest publicly accessible library on deaf history, sign language, and interpreting.
Guided tours will run hourly from 12 noon until 4pm, tours are approximately 50 minutes long.
Tours are in English with British Sign Language (BSL) interpretation.
