Canonmills Church

New

26 September 2026 (10:00 - 16:00)

Edinburgh

In Person
2026 Theme

Since 1988, our church has called our Canonmills building home. Previously a penny school attended by Robert Louis Stevenson, then a mission hall and a base for the 46th Edinburgh Company of the Boy's Brigade, today the historic Canonmills building is home to our vibrant church.

We are an open-minded and ecumenical church which operates within the principles of independence and freedom of thought, welcoming people from all background to Canonmills Church.

In keeping with this year’s Doors Open Days theme ‘Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine’ we’ll explore the ways in which our historic building has changed purpose over the years.

Entering the building, people will be given the opportunity to visit the room that once held Robert Louis Stevenson’s (RLS) infant class - it is now our vestry. Here, the RLS Club will have a display and will be available with a wealth of information.

Venturing further inside, visitors can view a photo exhibition on the 46th Company Boys’ Brigade in our Coffee Room where in attendance will be some of those boys (now men) who were part of the company.

We’ll also be unveiling a newly discovered Tom Curr original painting, dating back to his days as a member and deacon at Dublin Street Baptist Church. Our Church Hall will host the Baptist History Project - complete with visual aids - who can give enthralling accounts of the history of the church in Edinburgh, and would love to speak to visitors about their project.

To round off your visit, we'll have refreshments available for those who'd like to sit down and rest with a cuppa.
