2026 Theme: Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine.

Camera Obscura connects strongly with this year’s Doors Open Day theme, Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine. Founded by pioneering entrepreneur Maria Short and established in its current Royal Mile location in 1853, it is Edinburgh’s oldest purpose-built visitor attraction. Today, we continue to revive this remarkable optical heritage through live demonstrations of the Victorian Camera Obscura, while reimagining Patrick Geddes’ Outlook Tower as a place of curiosity and discovery for modern audiences. Through hands-on exhibits, inclusive experiences, innovation and climate-conscious action, we aim to keep this unique part of Edinburgh’s heritage meaningful, accessible and alive for future generations.
