Barnton Bunker - WWII Operations Complex, Barnton Bunker Preservation Society

Situated in an old stone quarry in a picturesque forest, the above ground RAF Fighter Command Operations Base built during WWII served as an airplane scrambling station, keeping Scottish airspace safe from unfriendly aircrafts. Abandoned by the military in the 1980’s, it fell into disrepair and suffered from the elements and vandalism. Today, it is being transformed by volunteers into a space for unique offbeat community and cultural events~ that foster a spirit of international collaboration and inspire the imagination!
Through our restoration efforts and volunteer-led creative projects and initiatives- we gradually fix the once severely damaged areas of the site and create spaces and events to inspire and teach—about the value of communication, collaboration, imagination, and history education. By welcoming unique creative voices, cultural celebrations, community events, and international volunteers into a place built from fear of other countries and designed for war operations, we actively rebel against exclusion and nationalistic aggression, and are building something full of hope and curiosity in each other, and our shared future together.
Guests will be given a volunteer led tour of the above ground RAF base and grounds, and have the opportunity to see a special presentation about the restoration work and creative initiatives of the preservation society.
There will also be a screening room featuring short films about former bunker employee, Alan Treloar, 91, who will be present for Q&A's Saturday- 1:30-4:00 pm, and a preview of our upcoming film-festival submission about a Syrian refugee who found healing by volunteering at the bunker. (Who will also be available for conversation both days in the garden!)
Additionally, guests will be able to visit with our goats on our scenic hilltop overlooking the Firth of Forth, and get photo ops with our sword in the stone! There will also be a colouring activity for kids in our woodland hut!

There is stepped access.
Parking is available at the hiking trailhead, and on street parking in the nearby neighbourhood.
Please note that access to the lower underground facilities are not part of the Doors Open Days tour.
