The story of Tundergarth Kirk is over 100 years old (longer if you include the Old Kirk Ruins). As a Trust we need to reimagine the place and purpose of the church building by exploring how places of heritage can become places of memory without turning to dust and rubble. In time we will work with many partner groups and organisations to produce a respectful yet engaging collection of digital stories, experiences, and works of art, that could help visitors understand how the kirk's significance has evolved over time while remaining sensitive to those affected by the PanAm 103 attack.

The Trust is committed to preserving the site's architectural and historical significance, while developing it as a centre for education, remembrance, and community engagement. Tundergarth Kirks Trust aims to revive the kirk as a key location within the local community – serving the parishes needs both in a traditional format with continued church services and ceremonies, but also as a site of community events like harvest suppers, movie nights, and craft afternoons. We want to see our congregation grow, and keep the church doors open for years to come with new faces finding meaning and joy in the events offered by our hardworking Trust.

For Doors Open Days we are also very excited to be working with both Lockerbie Academy and Syracuse University to have some of this year’s Lockerbie Fellowship students on site delivering activities that they have put together including treasure hunts and quizzes. We will be launching our “Voices through time” competition where will invite entrants to submit a creative piece in 1 or more of 5 categories – Poetry, short story (1000 words), photography, art, under 18.

Prompt - If the stones could speak, what stories would they tell?

We want our visitors to be inspired by the history, landscape and stories of Tundergarth Kirk in this online creative challenge and look forward to welcoming original entries that explore this years Open Doors themes of Revive, Resist and Reimagine. Open to all ages and abilities, with selected entries showcased online and in future exhibitions.

Additional Access Information

All of the paths on site are wheelchair accessible, as is the main 1900 church (via a ramp).

The Remembrance Room has a small step up into it and the Kirk ruins (as can be seen in photo 2) are on rough grass.
