St Drostan's Kirk, Markinch
Central Fife
St Drostan’s Markinch has one of the most perfectly preserved early Norman tower in Scotland. It also has a claim to be one of the oldest, most likely built by Earl Constantine of Fife in the 1120s and completed by his successor Gillemichael in the 1130s.
Their grandsons granted the church to the newly formed Priory of St Andrews between 1165 and 1170. The east and west gables are still preserved but the north and south walls have been reconstructed to accommodate a growing population.
Recently a large arch was discovered, hidden by later building works, and its original appearance has been recreated by a wonderful mural painted by artist Donna Forrester. The archaeology continues to uncover new features of this remarkable building.
It is believed to be one of the oldest buildings in Scotland still in continuous use - but why such quality and why Markinch?
