St John's Tower, Ayr

St John’s Tower is the remaining bell tower from Ayr’s medieval Church of St John the Baptist. Probably built in the 14th century. It is Ayr’s oldest building. In 1315 Robert the Bruce convened the Scottish Parliament in the church. Restored by J K Hunter for the 3rd Marquis of Bute in 1913-14. A landmark for seamen in the past and offering magnificent panoramic views.
Access to the tower will be facilitated by members of the Friends of St John’s Tower (FrOST) group.

Additional Access Information
Access through the tower is via one narrow, winding staircase with over 100 steps. FrOST members try to manage the flow of visitors, but some congestion can still occur. Visitors should be mindful of low doorways throughout the building and overhanging slates on the parapet.
The tower is not suitable for people who suffer from vertigo or claustrophobia, and the climb to the top should only be attempted by those with a good level of fitness.
