Victoria and Albert Halls, Ballater

The Albert Memorial Hall is a prominent Category C Listed building at the heart of Ballater. Officially opened on 29 September 1875, it was built as a community meeting place for residents and also housed the village post office on the ground floor. Situated opposite the railway station, the building occupied an important position within village life and was one of the first landmarks encountered by visitors arriving in Ballater, including Queen Victoria during her frequent journeys to nearby Balmoral.

The Albert Hall occupies the first floor of the building and continues to serve the community through a wide range of events and activities. Around twenty years after its opening, additional accommodation was created through the development of the Victoria Hall and Gordon Institute complex, including the space now known as the Mike Sheridan Room, reflecting the growing needs of the community.

For almost 150 years, the halls have played an important role in the social, cultural and civic life of Ballater. Today, they remain a vibrant community hub, cared for by a dedicated committee of trustees committed to preserving the building and ensuring its continued use for future generations.

During Doors Open Days, visitors are invited to explore this historic building and discover its rich story through a special exhibition of original plans, photographs, documents and artefacts illustrating the history of the halls and the many activities that have taken place within them.
