**NEW FOR 2026**
Tough Church is a striking 19th-century rural landmark designed by the renowned Aberdeen architect John Smith. Set within an area closely associated with the development of the Aberdeen Angus breed, the church stands as an important part of the area's architectural and social heritage. Behind its simple exterior lies an elegant interior featuring classical detailing and a remarkable marble sculpture, an unexpected artistic treasure in a rural setting.
For generations, the church has been at the heart of local community life, witnessing baptisms, weddings, funerals and countless gatherings. Today, following community acquisition of the building, a new chapter is beginning as local people work to preserve its heritage and re-establish it as a vibrant community asset.
The project reflects the European Heritage Days theme of Revive, Resist, Reimagine. Through community ownership and sustainable planning, the building is being safeguarded for the future while being reimagined as a flexible space for events, learning, wellbeing and cultural activities. In doing so, Tough Church is transforming from a heritage building at risk into a living part of the community once more.
Activities:
- Explore the church and discover its architectural and historical features
- Meet volunteers and learn about the building's past and future
- Daily talk at 11am on the Byres family, the church's architecture and its unique marble sculpture
- Children's craft activities with take-home creations

- Booking not required for general visits
- Activities will take place on the ground floor only
- Teas and coffees served - donations welcome
