The National Decommissioning Centre

The National Decommissioning Centre (NDC), located in Newburgh, Aberdeenshire, is a multi‑million‑pound research and development facility dedicated to transforming the way energy assets are decommissioned and supporting the transition to net zero emissions. Launched in 2019, the centre works closely with industry, regulators and key stakeholders, delivering a diverse programme of research spanning engineering, environmental, economic and regulatory challenges.
The NDC is home to a unique suite of advanced facilities, including a state‑of‑the‑art, walk‑in marine simulator. This impressive 9‑metre diameter, 300‑degree immersive environment features four control stations, enabling real‑time, real‑physics simulations. Additional specialist equipment includes a high‑power laser, indoor water immersion tank, hydrostatic pressure chamber and large‑scale environmental chambers.
The centre’s work links closely to this year’s European Heritage Days theme by exploring the future of offshore structures and their impact on the marine environment. Research carried out at the NDC examines the balance between removing ageing infrastructure and preserving important marine habitats that have developed around them, helping to inform decision‑making across the energy sector.
