Freemasonry has been part of Stonehaven's history for almost three centuries. The first recorded minute of The Lodge of Stonehaven dates from 27 December 1738, making it one of the oldest continuous organisations in the town. The Lodge received its official charter from the Grand Lodge of Scotland in 1755, establishing its place in Scotland's rich Masonic tradition.
Over the years, Lodge members met in a variety of locations across Stonehaven, including private houses and other buildings within the town. The Lodge found its permanent home in 1929, when members purchased the former United Presbyterian Church building in Ann Street. Since then, the building has served as the centre of Masonic activity in Stonehaven and continues to play an important role in the local community.
During Doors Open Days, visitors will have a rare opportunity to step inside the Lodge, meet members and learn more about Freemasonry, its history in Stonehaven and the role it continues to play today. The event offers a chance to explore a building that is not usually open to the public and to discover an often-misunderstood aspect of Scotland's social history.
