Founded in 1828 as The Museum of the Banff Institution, this is the oldest museum in Scotland north of Perth. When the Banff Institution was dissolved in 1875, its collections were transferred to Banff Town Council, ensuring their preservation for future generations.

The present museum and library building dates from 1902 and remains an important cultural landmark. Today, the museum is run by the Banff Preservation and Heritage Society in partnership with Aberdeenshire Museums Service.

The exhibits showcase a wide range of fascinating artefacts, spanning from the Celtic period to the modern day. Together, they offer a rich insight into life in Banffshire, highlighting the history of Banff and Macduff through carefully preserved objects and displays. The museum also houses an impressive collection of Banff silver.

2025 marked the 60th anniversary of the Banff Preservation and Heritage Society, celebrating six decades of dedicated work to protect and promote the town’s built heritage. The summer exhibition reflects on the Society’s many successful projects, exploring its history and achievements while looking ahead to its continued efforts to safeguard Banff’s unique architectural legacy.
