Christ Church is a charming Category B Listed church and part of the Scottish Episcopal Church, a member of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Although modest in scale, the church is noted for its beautiful stained glass, elegant proportions and richly detailed interior.
The roots of the congregation stretch back to 1719, when the Episcopalian minister in Huntly was ejected from the Parish Church. Supported by many local worshippers, he established a meeting house in "the Raws", and a school for Episcopalian children soon followed. During the Jacobite period, the congregation endured significant hardship. The meeting house was damaged during the events surrounding the 1745 Rising, and during the years of the Penal Laws, worship often took place secretly in remote outdoor locations, sometimes under cover of darkness.
The present church was built in 1849 to a design by architect Thomas Mackenzie. Its simple nave-and-chancel plan is enhanced by an attractive octagonal spirelet beside the porch. Inside, visitors can admire painted roof panels depicting open Bibles with scriptural texts, while the chancel features the Creed, Lord's Prayer and Ten Commandments displayed on a decorative gilded background. The church's architectural and historic significance is recognised through its Category B listing, reflecting both its distinctive design and its importance in Huntly's religious heritage.
Following restoration work, the Christ Church Garden was created as a peaceful outdoor space that complements the simplicity and beauty of the church building.
