Hallgreen Castle

Overlooking Inverbervie Bay, Hallgreen Castle is a remarkable fortified house with origins dating back to the 14th century. Although extended and altered over the centuries, much of the original structure survives, offering a fascinating glimpse into Scotland’s medieval past. Rising three storeys high and set within four acres of grounds, the castle retains a number of historic features, including original gun loops visible within its thick stone walls.

Now a private residence, Hallgreen Castle is rarely open to the public. Doors Open Days offers a unique opportunity to step inside this historic building and explore parts of the castle that are not normally accessible. Visitors can also enjoy an art exhibition in the Great Hall, providing a striking contrast between contemporary creativity and the castle’s centuries-old surroundings.

In the castle grounds, the Knights of Monymusk will bring medieval history to life with demonstrations of period combat techniques, armour and traditional weaponry. These displays offer an engaging insight into the martial skills and equipment that would have been familiar to the castle’s former inhabitants.
