Built in 1853 to a design by Peter Brown, the Finzean Bucket Mill is a rare water-powered sawmill and the only surviving mill of its kind in Scotland still associated with the production of its traditional product – turned wooden buckets.

Powered by water and containing an extraordinary collection of historic machinery, the mill offers a fascinating insight into traditional rural industries and woodworking skills. For generations, local craftspeople used the mill's specialised equipment to produce wooden buckets and other timber products, supporting the rural economy of Deeside.

Today, the mill is cared for by the Finzean Bucket Mill Community Interest Company, a not-for-profit social enterprise dedicated to preserving the building, its machinery and the traditional skills associated with it. As one of only three surviving water-powered sawmills of its type, and with all three currently on the Buildings at Risk Register, the project is exploring how heritage-led regeneration and social enterprise can help secure the future of historic rural buildings while supporting sustainable local development.

Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the mill on guided tours and learn about the extensive work being undertaken to return the machinery and building to working order. The project demonstrates how historic industrial heritage can be revived and reimagined for the benefit of future generations.
