Deeside Gliding Club, Aboyne

Set against the spectacular backdrop of the Cairngorms, Deeside Gliding Club has been introducing people to the experience of silent flight for more than 70 years. The club's origins date back to the mid-1950s when gliding began in Aberdeenshire at Inverallochy, near Fraserburgh. By the late 1950s operations had moved to Aberdeen Airport before relocating in the mid-1960s to its current home near Aboyne, where the club has remained for almost six decades. 

Run entirely by volunteers, the club is built on a strong tradition of sharing skills and experience. Members support one another in all aspects of gliding, from flying and instruction to aircraft maintenance and operations. Over the years, many pilots who began their flying journey at Deeside have gone on to careers in the RAF, commercial aviation and even the Red Arrows. 

The club operates throughout the year and welcomes aspiring pilots, aviation enthusiasts and visitors interested in learning more about the sport. Its location above the Dee Valley offers ideal conditions for gliding, with pilots making use of rising air currents to soar above the surrounding landscape. 

During Doors Open Days, visitors can explore the clubhouse, learn about the history of gliding in the north east through a dedicated exhibition, and find out what is involved in becoming a glider pilot. If weather conditions allow, there may also be opportunities to watch gliders in action.
