Standing at the heart of the village, Bennachie Parish Church at Echt occupies a prominent position at the crossroads of the historic routes linking Aberdeen and Tarland, and Banchory and Kintore. Built between 1804 and 1806, the church is an early example of the Gothic style, distinguished by its elegant, pointed basket-weave windows and strong architectural presence.
The church has long-standing connections with the nearby Dunecht Estate, which played an important role in its history and development. In 1930, the building underwent a major refurbishment costing £3,000. During this work, the pulpit, lectern and communion table were crafted by skilled local tradesmen from the estate, while the striking wooden ceiling was modelled on that of St Machar’s Cathedral in Aberdeen.
Further improvements were carried out in 2019, when underfloor heating was installed, the interior was redecorated and the original pews were replaced with chairs to create a more flexible and welcoming space for worship and community activities.
Today, the church and congregation form part of Bennachie Parish, continuing a tradition of worship and community service that has been at the centre of village life for more than 200 years.
