Banffshire East Church of Scotland (Formerly Macduff Parish Church)

Occupying a prominent position on the hill overlooking Macduff harbour, this striking church has been at the heart of the community since it opened in 1805. Its commanding position and distinctive architecture, featuring an Italianate square tower, domed roof, and cupola added in 1865, make it a notable landmark, particularly for boats approaching the town.
The church is rich in architectural and historical interest. Among its most significant features are the stained-glass windows installed in 1922 in memory of local people who lost their lives in the First World War. Created by the renowned City Glass Company of Glasgow, these windows were also exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. More recently, additional stained-glass work by artist Jennifer-Jane Bayliss has been installed in the vestibule, commemorating the church’s connections with Malawi.
The organ, built in 1903, remains an important feature of the church’s musical life. Over the years, the building has been carefully maintained and adapted to meet the needs of an active and evolving congregation.
The surrounding graveyard is also well worth exploring, with many interesting gravestones alongside Commonwealth War Graves Commission burials.
In August 2025, Macduff Parish Church united with Whitehills Parish Church to form the Banffshire East Church of Scotland, marking a new chapter in its long history.
