Banff Castle Community Centre

Banff Castle, originally a medieval royal stronghold, is first recorded in historical accounts from the 12th century. In its early years, it served both as a defensive fortification and a royal residence, holding significant strategic importance in the region. Over time, however, the original structure fell into ruin, and little of the medieval castle remains today.
In the 18th century, the site was transformed with the construction of a Georgian mansion around 1750, designed by the distinguished architect John Adam. Despite retaining the name “Banff Castle,” the building we see today is not medieval in form, but rather a refined example of Georgian architecture—symmetrical, balanced, and elegantly proportioned.
This transformation represents a striking shift in both architectural style and social function. What was once a fortress of power and defence evolved into a gracious domestic residence. Today, the building has been thoughtfully repurposed as a community arts centre, ensuring its legacy continues in a meaningful and accessible way. Through music, exhibitions, and workshops, the castle remains a vibrant cultural hub.
The surrounding gardens and parkland enhance its appeal, offering scenic beauty while firmly connecting the site to the local community—blending history with everyday life.
