We respond to the challenges posed by the climate and nature crises through applying our scientific expertise to developing interventions, tools, products and land management practices to improve the resilience of crops, land, natural resources and communities.

Our Craigiebuckler campus hosts the Hutton Hub, a multi-million-pound development which offers a space for academics, businesses and the public to collaborate and use cutting-edge technology to help the north-east achieve a Just Transition to Net Zero.

Financed by the Scottish Government's Just Transition Fund, the Macaulay Development Trust and the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, the Hutton Hub features top-of-the-range technology and facilities which are open to hire for businesses and the public.

Included in these new facilities are:

  • A 360-degree Immersive Suite equipped with a media server, games engine and surround sound - allowing for videos, graphics, models and simulated environments to be projected on all four walls

  • A café where members of the public can drop by to grab a coffee and learn more about the Hutton’s research

  • VR and augmented reality headsets

  • Touch tables

  • An eye tracker

  • A podcasting, video and sound editing suite

  • Two spacious lecture theatres perfect for holding conferences and events

The event will involve:

  • An exclusive look at our state-of-the-art spaces designed for innovation, collaboration and community engagement

  • Short talks from our scientists showcasing exciting ongoing projects. Hear from our scientists on interpretation of landscapes and their changes over time as mapped in 1700s through to the present day, use of Soil in Criminal Investigations

  • Interactive experiences in our brand-new immersive suite, including scientific visualisations, digital displays and virtual reality demonstrations.

  • Tours of facilities hosted within our campus with lab-based activities for all ages.

  • Interactive displays from our scientists and campus partners showcasing minerals and soil to bugs and tissue materials.

  • Showcase from Hutton Unearthed - a bold new fundraising campaign that digs deep into the challenges shaping our planet’s future.
