National Records of Scotland (26 September)

The National Records of Scotland

Visitors attending a guided tour of the Adam Dome

The National Records of Scotland (NRS) is inviting visitors to explore one of Edinburgh's most distinctive historic buildings as General Register House takes part in Doors Open Days on Saturday 26 September.

NRS cares for Scotland's national archives, preserving records that tell the story of the nation's people, places and history. General Register House, located at the east end of Princes Street, is one of the world's oldest purpose-built archive buildings still in use.

During Doors Open Days, visitors will have the opportunity to see records from across the national collections on display beneath the spectacular Adam Dome, designed by renowned architect Robert Adam. NRS experts will also be leading tours of the building, find out more here.

Archivists and specialists will be on hand throughout the day to answer questions and share insights into the work of preserving and making Scotland's documentary heritage accessible to the public.

The event also offers a final opportunity to visit For the Safety of All: Scotland's Lighthouses, an exhibition exploring the construction of Scotland's lighthouses and the lives of the keepers who helped guide sailors safely around the country's coastline.

While General Register House welcomes visitors throughout the year, Doors Open Days provides a unique chance to learn more about the building, its collections and the people who care for them. Staff look forward to welcoming visitors and sharing the stories held within Scotland's national archives.

The National Records of Scotland will be open from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 26 September 2026 at General Register House, 2 Princes Street, Edinburgh. Further information, including tour details and accessibility information can be found here.
