Elgin's Historic Building with a New Future
This building is a fitting example of this year's European Heritage Days theme: Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine.
No 7. Academy Street in Elgin was originally a Victorian school, then a council office and has now been given a remarkable new lease of life. As part of this year's Doors Open Day, visitors are being invited to explore No. 7 Academy Street and see how this familiar Elgin building has been transformed for a new generation.
A Building That Has Served Elgin for Generations
Welcome to No. 7 Academy Street in Elgin.
Many local people will recognise the building, but not everyone will know its story. Originally built as a school in the late 19th century, No. 7 went on to play an important role in the life of the town as one of Moray Council's office buildings. For many years, a variety of local government functions were managed from here.
When council services were brought together onto a single campus in 2012, however, the building became surplus to requirements. Although it continued to be used occasionally by local community groups, including a theatre company, its condition gradually declined and it was eventually closed.
A New Chapter Begins
The turning point came in 2020 when the property was put up for sale.
Just across the road, Elgin Baptist Church had increasingly found itself in need of additional space to support its growing range of activities. When the opportunity arose, church leaders proposed purchasing the building and, with the support of the congregation, an offer was made.
By the end of 2020, No. 7 Academy Street had a new owner and a new purpose.
What followed was a five-year journey of planning, fundraising and redevelopment. In the early stages, much of the work involved stripping out the building's interior to prepare it for a complete transformation. A significant amount of that work was carried out by church members themselves, helping clear the way for the extensive rebuilding programme that followed.
Reimagined for Today's Community
Visitors arriving today will discover a building that has been thoughtfully repurposed for modern use.
Inside is a versatile suite of halls, meeting rooms and flexible spaces designed to accommodate a wide range of activities. Whether it's a large gathering, a community event, a workshop or a confidential one-to-one conversation, No. 7 now offers spaces suited to many different needs.
The vision from the outset has always extended beyond the church itself. The aim has been to create a place that can also serve the wider Elgin community, providing facilities and opportunities for local organisations, groups and activities.
That vision is already beginning to take shape, with several community groups expressing interest in using the building for meetings and events.
Discover No. 7 for Yourself
Doors Open Day offers a chance to explore the building, learn more about its history and see how an important part of Elgin's heritage has been adapted for the future. Visitors will be able to walk through the newly created spaces, meet some of the people involved in the project and hear more about the plans for the years ahead.
And there's another reason to visit too: live music is planned to be performed at intervals during the afternoon, at times when there are more people in the building.
