Christ Church, Huntly, Aberdeenshire (19 & 20 September)
Tucked away in a quiet residential street close to the town centre of Huntly in Aberdeenshire is the attractive small building of the Episcopal Christ Church.
Built by acclaimed architect Thomas Mackenzie in 1849, it is a beautifully proportioned building featuring lancet windows, a small tower with gabled openings and a welcoming door with carved columns which support a moulded archway.
Surrounding the church is a beautiful garden with a mixture of wildflowers and formal plantings. There are seats and paved walkways to welcome all.
Walking into the church one is struck by its simplicity and beauty. Sunlight through the fine stained windows shine on lovely old wooden pews, a wooden altar with panels depicting angels and a lamb and the brass cross and candlesticks. A sacred space for peace and prayer.
A spiral stairway leads up to the gallery where the Mirlees organ is positioned. This beautiful instrument is the same age as the building and was originally used in a private house in Edinburgh before being moved in 1910 to the parish church in Kinneff. It was restored and brought to Christ Church in 2013. Made of walnut with gold leaf detailing, it has 216 pipes, and no screws being held together by dowels and dovetailing.
Extensive restoration work of the building took place 10 years ago with replacement stone details and lime harling. A small toilet and kitchen were added so that now the church can offer refreshment and hospitality to all.
