Banff Castle Where History Meets Community

Every historic building has a story to tell, and Banff Castle's begins more than 800 years ago.

The elegant Georgian building we see today, designed by John Adam and completed in 1750, stands on the site of a much older medieval castle once held by the Comyn family, Earls of Buchan. This was an important stronghold, controlling trade along the River Deveron and key routes through north-east Scotland.

Over the centuries, Banff Castle has witnessed some of Scotland's most turbulent periods. It changed hands during the Wars of Scottish Independence, later became a family home, served during the Second World War, and since 1950 has belonged to the people of Banff.

The castle's history can still be traced throughout the town, from street names that recall its medieval past to stories hidden within the grounds themselves, including a Monkey Puzzle tree marking Banff's connection to José de San Martín, one of South America's great liberators.

This September, visitors will have the chance to explore the many layers of Banff Castle's past, from its medieval origins to its role as a community hub today. It is a place that has continually adapted to serve new generations, and remains an important part of Banff's story.
