Castle Roy, Nethy Bridge
30-1 October 2017
Castle Roy is reported to be the oldest masonry fortification in Scotland, dating from c1200. The castle is currently being consolidated with a view to creating a free, all-abilities visitor attraction and community facility for outdoor theatre recitals and events like weddings.
Castle Roy is one of the earliest medieval castles in Scotland, and recent archaeological investigation undertaken by the University of Stirling has discovered how very local materials were employed to make the lime mortar used to originally construct the building. The Castle is open for Doors open Day and the Highland Archaeological Festival, when visitors will also be offered short guided tours around the ruined castle building.
The castle is a building site so people looking around will need to be escorted.
