The church probably occupies the site of a 7th century monastery founded by Lindisfarne Priory. The building dates from 11th century and has a fine 12th century south door. Various alterations and additions have been made over the centuries. The church is Category A Listed. There is a small museum of sculptured stones at the kirkyard entrance.
