Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival

Tucked in the heart of sandstone tenements, yards from busy Argyle Street in Finnieston, this urban garden grows various crops and houses a tool shed, polytunnel, greenhouse, five raised beds & mini orchard.

Up a lane between residential blocks, you may be expecting to find the usual city “back court”; dejected, empty washing lines and stowed bins. But behind Brechin Street you will find The Back Garden.

Set up by Annexe Communities in 2011 using a grant obtained from the Climate Challenge Fund. The Back Garden was officially transferred to the G3 Growers the following year, a small committee from the community who oversee the smooth running of The Back Garden.

As far as is known, the site was once occupied by a “mews building” which later became a motor workshop and after that was demolished it became a local fly-tip.

Step into The Back Garden and you step out of the city. These tenements make effective sound barriers and screens the garden from the worst of the traffic fumes. All on ground level, the gravel pathways are easy for you to get around; motorised wheelchairs seem to cope better than manuals, prams and such.

On street parking available - charges apply

Accessibility: All ground level with wide pathways suitable for wheelchair access. All pathways around the garden are loose chips, we have members who use an electric wheelchair and they are able to get around with no problem. The garden itself does not have a toilet, we have many establishments close by who will be happy for visitors to make use of their facilities.

Doors Open Day 2018:

Enjoy the garden at its peak.

Why not pop in and pick up some tips on growing fruit and vegetables for yourself? On Saturday you will be able to take part in hands on gardening; taking cuttings, composting advice and harvesting, or watch a cooking demonstration from our in garden nutritionist Nicola Becci, or do some gardening based crafts - especially for children of all ages. Refreshments will also be available. Anyone musical will be welcome to have a tinkle on the ivories as we host "Lids Open Day".

Mon 2.30pm-4.30pm, Wed 12pm-2pm, Thu 6.30pm-7.30pm, Fri 10am-12pm, Sat 11am-4pm

Booking not required

Don't despair if your little one(s) do not like getting their hands too dirty, they can easily be kept amused doing crafts; making a cress head or decorating a pot plant to take home while you enjoy gardening.
