Old College sits at the heart of the University of Edinburgh. Work on Robert Adam’s original design began in 1789 and it was completed by William Henry Playfair who created the magnificent Playfair Library. The dome was added in 1887 bearing a 6ft foot high bronze statue of a youth bearing ‘the torch of knowledge’ and is affectionately nicknamed ‘Golden Boy.’ Meeting rooms and the main stair case inside Old College contain fine paintings, including a dozen by Raeburn.
