Industry

Scotland's industrial heritage is packed full of fascinating sites.  Wherever natural resources like coal, rich soil, water and forrest were to be found, industry flourished.  Here are our highlights from this year's programme...

McLean Museum and Art Gallery - Image 1Designed by A Adamson, the museum houses fine displays relating to local industrial heritage. The importance of shipbuilding over the centuries is celebrated in the displays. Much of the ethnographical material on display was brought to Greenock and donated to the McLean by seafarers. The collection of pictures includes spectacular maritime paintings along with works by the Scottish Colourists and contemporary artists.

Albert Bartlett Ltd

A family business founded in 1948, Albert Bartlett invested £30 in an old water boiler and cast iron bath in order that he might set up a small beetroot boiling operation in Coatbridge.  Albert Bartlett is the UK's leading grower and packer of root vegetables.  In November 2003 they moved from their Watt Street home to a new state-of-the-art facility on Stirling Road.  The site packs over 4,000 tonnes of potatoes a week and has been accredited with various environmental awards. 

Activities

Presentation on the life of a potato, from farm to plate.  Information on the company and brand, potato sampling and factory tour. 

Factory Tours (maximum groups of 50) (tours times are 10.30, 11.30, 12.30, 13.30, 14.30 and 15.30)
There will be potato sampling and 'Mr Potato men' to greet children. 

Please note that the factory is suitable for children over the age of 6 and all children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.  For Health and Safety reasons all jewellery should be removed prior to entering the Factory.  Due to the nature of the Factory some areas may be inaccessible for disabled visitors.

Scottish Lime Centre

In its heyday, Charlestown produced over one third of the lime in Scotland for use in building and industry. Now, the Scottish Lime Centre Trust provides training and hands-on experience in the use of lime for building repair in the former Broomhall Estate Workshops and Yard, restored and converted in 2000.

Activities
Demonstrations of traditional building skills, opportunities for the public of all ages to ‘have a go’, children’s crafts and activities.

Kingdom of Fife Railway Preservation Society

The Kirkland marshalling yard once handled all coal exports out of Fife through Methil docks. 

The enthusiastic Preservation Society looks forward to sharing with you the ever improving results of their year-round efforts.

Activities

Get really close up to part of your national transport heritage. Guided tours, exhibits, footplate rides throughout the day (small charge).

University of Dundee - Archive Services

University of Dundee - Archive Services - Image 1An early example of an office tower block by a nationally important architect, clad in timber and stone. Head to the basement for the archives. The University holds the biggest collection of textile records in Europe, the Episcopal Diocese of Brechin and NHS Tayside archives, University manuscripts from 1881, the Michael Peto photo-journalist collection, amongst others.
Activities

Come and see diaries, photographs, letters and other records relating to the history of Dundee and Tayside. Highlights include records of the jute industry in Dundee and India, and material from hospitals and asylums and the Brechin Episcopal Church.  We have fascinating collections and are open to the public.

Verdant Works

Verdant Works - Image 1Verdant Works is an A-listed building and a rare surviving example of an early 19th century courtyard-style mill. Take a behind-the-scenes tour, meet the curators and learn about the care and conservation of museum collections. Also take a first look at the newly opened ‘Weaver’s Room’.
Activities

Tours run hourly from 10.30 am (last tour 3.30 pm)
Behind-the-scenes guided tours are free; normal admission charges apply to main Verdant Works museum.

Families can also visit the newly open ‘Weaver’s Room’, which tells the history of the weaver trade and meet a few of its current members.

St Monans Windmill

Enjoy a short walk from either St Monans (0.75 mile) or Pittenweem (1.5 miles) along the Fife Coastal Path to visit this late eighteenth century windmill and nearby saltpans.

Activities

The restored windmill is the last remaining windmill in Fife. Good views can be seen of the Forth.

MacArthur's Store is a 17th century warehouse situated on the quayside of the old Cromwell Harbour in Dunbar.  The Dunbar harbour Trust has managed its restoration over the past two years as fishermen's stores and to provide an office and meeting place for the Trust.

Summerlee Heritage Centre

Summerlee, the museum of Scottish Industrial Life reopened in September 2008, following a major £10 million redevelopment.  The main exhibition hall was completely stripped out and refitted. 

The new hall now provides a modern and environmentally sustainable setting for some of Scotland's most important displays of social and industrial history, including many 'star' items from the collection unseen by the public. 

Activities

Much of the Museum’s collection of industrial machinery is in working condition and the interactive displays gives 'hands on' experience allowing visitors to explore their industrial heritage in a new and exciting way.
