This charming mid-19th century church replaced the original church built in 1208.  The medieval crypt and many stone features remain while four large stained glass windows (probably by C and L Ower) bring colour and light to the interior.

Murroes Church has been a seat of worship since its inception by Royal Charter signed by William 1 King of Scots in Forfar on 11th April 1203 and gifted by Earl Gilchrist on Angus. The Crypt is believed to contain the remains of some of the members of the Fotheringham family, landlords of Powrie and Ballumbie castles dating from the late 13th century.

St Salvador's Episcopal Church
open/close
18.09.10 (10.00-16.00)
St Salvador Street, Dundee,  DD3 7EW
Description
St Salvador's Episcopal Church - Image 1Nationally important Gothic revival church by G.F.Bodley, in the 14th century English style. Lofty, beautifully proportioned interior with large nave windows cleverly designed like a clerestory to lighten the nave.  The eyes are drawn to the dramatically painted and gilded chancel, the focus for the Mass.  Significantly Bodley also designed the fittings and fixtures to create a harmonious whole.  This includes a fine wrought iron chancel screen, wooden furnishings, beautiful polychromic stencilling reminiscent of the work of William Morris, and the magnificent painted and gilded reredos which dominates the whole church.  Bodley also had a keen interest in painted glass, and designed the fine windows made by Burlison and Grylls in polychromic glass.
Activities
Situated in the middle of the Hilltown area of Dundee we endeavour to continue the missionary spirit of our founder Bishop Forbes in the use of our church and attached buildings. We are currently embarking upon the second phase of a massive restoration project started in the 1990’s. With major grants from Heritage Lottery and Historic Scotland vital repair work to the roof and upper masonry is about to commence. This is essential to secure the integrity of the building before restoration of the stencilled interior.
