Area Programmes

Glasgow:  19 September 2009 – 20 September 2009

This fantastic event is Glasgow's way of celebrating its buildings, its streets, its parks and its people - in short itself! Glasgow Building Preservation Trust was established in 1982 to rescue, repair, restore and rehabilitate historic buildings of architectural merit which through neglect or abuse may otherwise be lost in Glasgow and the surrounding area. The Trust makes a major contribution to Glasgow's regeneration through the preservation of its built heritage and organises the annual Doors Open Day event in Glasgow.

Blairtummock House - Image 1B-listed Blairtummock House, with walled garden is an unusual survivor of the type of small country house once characteristic of the Monklands. As a home of local industrialists and embellished to reflect their rising fortunes, it reached its heyday in the early 20th Century under the ownership of Colonel Andrew Lamberton. Another prominent resident was Professor James McCall, founder of the Glasgow Veterinary College. The rural setting was changed fundamentally by post war housing, but demolition was averted by becoming a local base for the Parks Department until 1999. Yet another lease of life has recently been secured through a multi-agency funded restoration as a Business Centre.

A groundbreaking short film called 'Foundation Glasgow - the Growth of a City' was launched on Friday 31st July by the Deputy First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, and has been extended to 20th September especially for Glasgow's Doors Open Days. The 13 minute film which is viewed from above provides a unique way to experience the story of Glasgow as it unfolds beneath your feet. Beautiful animation and commentary explain the city's evolution from a river crossing to Scotland's largest city and the host of the 2014 Commonweath Games.

This exceptional film, which charts Glasgow's development, culture and heritage, is a key part of the Homecoming Scotland 2009 Programme. It will therefore be a poignant experience for both visitors and residents alike. The Registers of Scotland, responsible for creating the experience using historic maps and records, is the government department which compiles and maintains Scottish land and property registers from the 13th century onwards.

This unique film is on show to the public for free at the Registers of Scotland's customer service centre, 9 George Square, Glasgow from Monday 3rd August - Sunday 20th September.

The building started life as Overnewton Public School, opened in 1877 with a school role of 890 children.  The buildings we see today, although in need of restoration and repair, remain remarkably unchanged from the original design.

Throughout its history the building has always been associated with children, and it has a unique design and character, with many traditional features still intact.  The Glasgow Coat of Arms is carved onto the outside facade and it is undoubtedly an important building in Glasgow;s past.  The school has embarked, with support from Glasgow City Heritage Trust and the Climate Challenge Fund, on an ambitious programme of works to retain and restore the building's heritage for all who use and benefit from it, whilst becoming a low carbon sustainable building fit for the future.

Architect: J J Burnet

Transformed from derelict waste land to a thriving eco hub by a dedicated team of volunteers, this retail venture demonstrates that enterprise and environment can work hand in hand. The charity took on the site, named the Dear Green Place, in October 2008, to provide retail space for reclaimed wood and wood products.

It now offers a unique insight into the sustainable regeneration of local urban land. An opportunity to find out about wood recycling, GWR's products, services and volunteer opportunities.

For Doors Open Day this year GWC is embarking on a new project to build, at The Dear Green Place, a greenhouse out of reclaimed plastic bottles! Local schools, community groups and individuals are busy gathering two litre plastic bottles. Over 1500 are needed to make the structure so there is an appeal to the public to donate used, clear 2L plastic bottles. This experiemental greenhouse will provide vital growing space for fruit and veg seedlings and to help demonstrate the benefits of reusing materials.

To inspire people to build their own greenhouses a team of volunteers will assemble at The Dear Green Place over the Doors Open Day weekend and set about constructing! People are welcome to drop by and watch as it takes shape.

If you have 2L plastic bottles to donate please drop them off at The Dear Green Place or contact Martin on 07738002946, info@glasgowwoodrecycling.org.uk.

The Historic Glasgow event will be an opportunity for community groups, council services and others with an interest in the heritage of Glasgow, to exchange information and ideas about ongoing projects around the city.

This year the event's theme will be Local Filmed History, Stories and Trails. There will be an opportunity to pick up information on various trails throughout the city. There will be a number of seldom seen films shown dating from 1950 through to 1980. These will cover various topics including the changing working patterns in the city, regeneration of all aspects of Glasgow life including housing, retail, city nightlife, sports, art and culture. Glasgow's industrial past is also featured with a very interesting film on Glasgow Docklands. There will be clips including Glaswegians speaking about their perceptions and feelings regarding their city. One film in particular features a parody of a Glasgow taxi driver explaining the highlights of Glasgow to a slightly inebriated English Tourist (it was 1965 remember!). You will see how far Glasgow has come over the years, and witness the struggle to debunk perceptions of Glasgow as a mean city by promoting its many hidden jewels in the parks, architecture and culture. Any contribution you can contribute of the filmed history of Glasgow and its people will be welcome. As always this event is a fantastic opportunity to spread the word about the valuable work done by everyone concerned.
