This is the twelth year that East Dunbartonshire has taken part in the event.  Explore the hidden heritage on your doorstep and find out what goes on behind the doors of the everyday buildings on your highstreet.  All for free!

There has been a church on this pleasant site since the 12th century, although the present building dates only from the 1820s. There are some very fine stained glass windows by Stephen Adam, Gordon Webster, Sadie McLellan and Crear McCartney. In the graveyard are interesting relics of the days of the ‘Resurrection Men’ (body-snatchers), including a watch house and mortsafe (for grave protection).

Canal Trips

Canal trips will be provided by the Forth & Clyde Canal Society, from the landing stage at Townhead, Kirkintilloch throughout Doors Open Day.

Three vessels will be employed, with departures every half hour between 11am and 3.30pm. Depart on the Voyager from the Marina to Hillhead Bridge or the Gipsy to Glasgow Stables or the Janet Telford from the Leisuredrome, Bishopbriggs to Cadder.

Lenzie Old Parish Church

Lenzie Old Parish Church - Image 1Although opened in 1874 the church did not celebrate its centenary until 1876.  This was because the church was originally designated a ‘Chapel of Ease’ and was not elevated to the status of Parish Church until 1876. The villa of ‘Northwood’, Moncrieff Avenue was purchased in 1885 from Beatrice Clugston to act as a manse.

Lenzie Union Church

Lenzie Union Church was opened as a United Presbyterian Church in 1875, but also welcomed Free Church communicants.  Several of the stained glass windows in the church commemorate Glasgow commuter families who helped to establish the community including the Kirkland family.  Another window commemorates the Reverend William Miller, the first minister of the church.

Lenzie Walking Tour

Walking tours around Lenzie will start from Lenzie Union Church at 11.30am and 2.30pm.
Each will last about an hour. En route you will visit significant commuter villas representing the different stages of Lenzie's early development, the railway station and churches.

Milngavie Precinct at Entrance to West Highland Way, Douglas Street, Milngavie, Glasgow,  G62
Guided walk of 6-7 miles, taking 4-5 hours. Commences 10.30am at the West Highland Way Marquee, Milngavie Precinct. Will follow the Allander as far as Mugdock Castle (with access to the south-east tower). Thence to Craigend Castle, returning via Mugdock Reservoir. Participants are recommended to bring packed lunches.

Once home to the noble Grahams, Mugdock Castle sits proudly on a volcanic rock overlooking Mugdock Loch and the surrounding landscapes. 

This 14th century ruin offers a great visiting experience throughout the year.  The re-built south west tower will be open to visitors this weekend.

Building Date: 1372

The original east half of the castle was destroyed when the castle was twice sacked by the Covenanters during the civil wars in the 1640s.  It was home of one of Charles 1st's best generals, James Graham 5th Earl and 1st Marquis of Montrose who defeated the Covenanters seven times.

The Parish Church is a category A listed building and dates from 1807-08.  It stands on the original church of 1649.  It has an outstanding collection of 19th 20th and 21st century stained glass, including work by Stephen Adam, Gordon Webster and Alf Webster.

Seagull Trust Boathouse

The Seagull Trust is a charity that exists to provide canal trips for disabled people.  The Kirkintilloch boathouse was built to accommodate the Trust’s first Forth & Clyde Canal vessel, the Yarrow Seagull, launched in 1984.


Building Date: 1984

Vessels at the Quayside will include Janet Telford, Yarrow Seagull and Harmony Row.  On-board access to most of them will be available and photographic displays will be provided.  Staff in attendance.

St Cyprian's Scottish Episcopal Church

St Cyprian's Scottish Episcopal Church - Image 1Lenzie was a country residential area linked by rail with Glasgow that attracted the well-to-do. Anglican Christians within this group built this Episcopal Church that opened in 1873. Thomas Craig Christie of Bedlay Castle, Chryston was Chairman of the Building Committee and a substantial donor towards the original fabric.
