We are delighted to be able to offer members of the public the chance to visit more building across the city than ever before and we are sure there is something to suit every taste and interest. There are many new venues on this year's programme so this is the most in-depth Doors Open Days to take place in Dundee. Some of the tours fill up quickly so it is advisable to book in advance.

The event on the weekend 19th and 20th September gives you free access to over 50 remarkable buildings across Dundee.

Some open up once a year, some just once in a lifetime. Doors Open Days celebrates architecture, design, buildings, places and spaces right on your doorstep.

Visit West Green Park, created within the former Royal Liff psychiatric hospital. Within Greystanes House, on the walls of the patients' dining room, view two large murals, painted by the reowned Scottish artist Alberto Morrocco. The unique murals, created in the 1960s, depict Work and Rest and feature Pablo Picasso.

Come and view the fascinating material held by the University Archives. This hour long talk and tour covers the jute industry, hospitals and asylums, church records, railways, photographs, maps and plans and local and family history.

The building itself is an early example of an office tower block by a nationally important architect, clad in timber and stone.

Come and see diaries, photographs, letters and other records relating to the history of Dundee and Tayside. Highlights include records of the jute industry in Dundee and India, material from hospitals and asylums and old photographs of Dundee. We have fascinating collections and are open to the public.

Backstage Tour at Dundee Rep Theatre

Comprising of Dundee Rep Ensemble, Scottish Dance Theatre and Rep Creative Learning, Dundee Rep is one of the most awarded theatre in Scotland and the nation’s leading production house. On your backstage tour, you will be given access to all parts of the building normally closed to the public including the workshop, paint-shop, rehearsal rooms and costume department, and of course the stage.

This is your chance to see behind the scenes of one of Dundee’s community fire stations.  As well as getting the opportunity to see a working fire station in action, fire-fighters will be on hand to provide fire safety advice, offer free Home Fire Safety Visits and demonstrate some of their firefighting and rescue equipment and skills.

Blackness Road Community Fire Station is an integral part of the community and the firefighters are keen to use this opportunity to show our visitors the full range of work and activities that we undertake in keeping communities safe.

Broughty Castle Museum

Built in 1496 on a rocky promontory, Broughty Castle has faced many sieges and battles.

Drop in during Doors Open Days for a unique opportunity to view the magazine, which accommodates its artillery and ammunition store, and find out more about the Castle’s interesting military history.

Visitors are advised that due to the historic nature of the building there is no disabled access to the Castle or the artillery magazine.

This imposing B-listed church celebrates its 150th year features attractive Flemish glass, a rose window, a wooden ceiling complete with painted stars, as well as war memorials and tapestries showing local buildings. 

Church open for worship 11am-12pm on Sunday 20th September, visitors welcome.

Broughty has Talent - Explore our church and visit the art exhibition from ‘Heart for Art’ a project promoting creativity among people with dementia and showcasing the art created in the Broughty Ferry classes. There will also be an additional exhibition displaying talents, hobbies, and interests of local people in church and community.

Dalhousie Building Art Tour

Dalhousie Building Art Tour - Image 1The Dalhousie Building was named 'Best Commercial/Public Building' by the Dundee Institute of Architects in 2007. Airy and spacious, with an innovative modern design, this building is a purpose-built teaching facility. It contains four large lecture theatres, forty teaching/seminar rooms and several IT suites.

Join curator Matthew Jarron for a guided tour round the various works of art on display around the University’s main teaching building. Over 50 prints, paintings and sculptures are on show including work by Will Maclean, Susan Derges, Doug Cocker and Peter Collins.
