Dundee:  22 September 2012 – 23 September 2012

Fire stations, factories, castles, churches, laboratories, libraries, pubs and pools are just some of the Dundee landmarks that will be participating. Across the city, hundreds of people will be granted access to fascinating buildings not normally open to the public as well as taking part in events, tours and talks for all ages.

City Square was begun in 1914-22 with the Caird Hall complex, then the east and west wings were added in 1930-33 by city architect, James MacLellan Brown, based on Sir John Burnet's scheme of 1924.

Enter by the main door at 19 City Square to visit the Council Chambers aLord Provost's office and Twinning room.


Architect: Original Design-James Thomson.
Building Date: 1924, opened 1933

Guided tours and informal talks with regard to the history of the building.

Please note disabled access is only available via lift situated in the underground car park in Chrichton street.

 The school will open to the public to come in, take pictures and share childhood experiences with friends and family.

 TOURS ARE NOW FULLY BOOKED. The Shore - Image 1Listed waterfront landmark offers tours highlighting 360 years. Currently celebrating 10 years as a Dundee City Council youth venue, the 1828-built Exchange Coffee House retains numerous originals, including striking terrazzos and Grecian-style columns. Sub-ground hides medieval Packhouse Square - warehouses at 1600s harbour-level, remain testament to Dundee's maritime mercantile legacy.

Please note that there is disabled access to all floors but unfortunately our basement is not wheelchair accessible and has uneven floors, stairs and low ceilings in parts.

Arthurstone Community Library - Image 1Visit the first library to be built in Dundee using money donated by Andrew Carnegie.  The features you will see include the original tiling, woodwork and the very fine vaulted ceiling on the first floor.

You will also be able to see a display of photographs and information, past and present, about the library during your visit.

Blackness Road Fire Station - Image 1There’s the chance to see behind the scenes of one of Dundee’s community fire stations at the annual Doors Open Day this weekend. Blackness Road Fire Station will open its doors to members of the public on Saturday 22th September from 11.00 am to 4.00pm and as well as getting the opportunity to see a working fire station in action, firefighters will be giving out fire safety advice, offering free home fire safety visits and holding dramatic displays, including a chip pan fire demonstration.
Building Date: 1972
Station Manager Mark Crush is looking forward to Doors Open Day and welcoming members of the public to Blackness Road Fire Station. “The station is an integral part of the community; so the firefighters and I are keen to use Doors Open Day as an opportunity to show members of the public the full range of work we are undertaking to make our communities safer. Once again, we look forward to contributing to another successful Doors Open Day”.

B-listed stone Church with fish-scaled roof, attractive Flemish glass, rose window, moulded cornicing and painted wooden ceiling decorated with stars.  Interior contains East and St Aidan’s war memorials with records and family details of names commemorated.

Refreshments. Guides and information sheets for adults and children.

Floral displays for Harvest Thanksgiving.

Plans on show of St Aidan's redevelopment into community and worship centre.

Claypotts Castle

Claypotts Castle is a small but complete Z plan castle built for John Strachan between 1569 and 1588. It was later sold to the family of John Graham of Claverhouse, who forfeited his lands after his death at the battle of Killiecrankie. It is now cared for by Historic Scotland.

Open Saturday and Sunday 10am-4pm. Between 10am and 1pm on Saturday, visitors will be guided around the castle by the Junior Tour Guides of Claypotts Castle School, dressed in period costume. Later visits will be self guided. Guide books, souvenirs and refreshments will be available at the castle.

Please note parking is limited to 4/5 spaces. Disabled access is outside only.

 Come along and try your hand at being a dentist for the afternoon at Dundee’s very own Dental Hospital and School. Not only will you get to see what it’s like to train as a dentist there will also be tours of the building, which include rarely seen artwork by James McIntosh Partrick, elaborate staircases and fine stained-glass windows by Douglas Strachan.

Drop-in for tours around the building on the hour (12-4pm). Non-bookable but spaces are limited.

Dundee Central Library - Image 1Dundee Central Library moved from the Albert Institute to a new building in the Wellgate Centre in 1978 .  The Central Library, which also includes the Wighton Heritage Centre and the Steps Theatre, is the busiest public library in Scotland.   Behind the scenes sit some of Dundee's most treasured books and manuscripts.

The library has closed stack and strong room areas which hold unique collections of local importance such as original works by William McGonagall, Mary Slessor's archive, Lawson architectural sketches of Old Dundee and the original log book of items lost by victims of the Tay Rail Bridge Disaster.
