St John’s Kirk - Image 1

A church has stood on this site since at least the early 12th century giving rise to Perth’s alternative name St John’s Toun. Building work began on the present church in the mid-15th century, with the 155ft tower and octagonal spire completed by 1511.

It was here, in May 1559, that John Knox preached his sermon on the ‘sin of idolatry’, lighting the fuse of the Reformation in Scotland. The Kirk was restored by Sir Robert Lorimer in 1926 and is currently undergoing a major new renovation.

Building Date: 15th century

Architects plans and information about the project will be on display. As building works are on-going there will be restricted access to some areas of the Kirk.

The Fair Maid's House - Image 1

The Fair Maid’s House is the oldest secular building in Perth and probably dates from the late-15th century. Located near the Blackfriars monastery, it was purchased in 1629 by the Glover Incorporation.

In 1828 Sir Walter Scott published his famous romance The Fair Maid of Perth with the fictional heroine of the story, Catherine Glover, said to have lived in the old Glover’s Hall.

In 1893 the building was substantially altered to conform to Scott’s story. With the adjoining Lord John Murray’s House, the building is now being renovated by the Royal Scottish Geographical Society (RSGS) to create a public geographical information and education centre for Scotland.

Building Date: late 15th century, altered 19th century

Visitors can view a display at the Lord John Murray House, the administrative headquarters of the Society, to learn more about the renovation plans.
