The college is a partner in the UHI Millennium Institute network, which is working to achieve university status.

Built in the mid 1970s, Perth Fire Station provides cover for Perth and the wider Perthshire area and is the only station in Perth and Kinross crewed by around eighty full-time fire fighters, operating with four fire engines.

Perth Fire Station includes the regional Tayside Fire and Rescue Training Centre which delivers scenario training for fire fighters and includes simulations of building collapse, compartment fires and road traffic collisions.

The Western Division of Tayside Police has its headquarters in a five storey building on the edge of Perth city centre – one of the few post-modern buildings in Perth. The Western Division is responsible for the effective policing of some 2,000 square miles of land and a population base of some 133,000 people. Come along to discover more about the work of the Western Division.

The historic wooden-panelled Old Council Chambers occupies a site which has been the traditional civic hub of Perth since the 13th century. The room is used by Perth & Kinross Council Registration Service for civil marriages, partnerships, naming, renewal of vows and citizenship ceremonies. As well as registering contemporary life events, the Registrars also carry out family history research.

A rolling visual presentation will be on show with information about the Family History Services, and Keekin for Kin booklets will be available with handouts about the history of the room.

Perth Sheriff Court - Image 1The Sheriff Court was built in 1819 to a neo-Greek design by Sir Robert Smirke, the architect who later designed the British Museum. It was erected on the site of the 16th-century Gowrie House and was the first building on the new Victorian riverside route that was to become Tay Street. The impressive portico with its huge ten-bay Doric colonnade was originally intended for a country mansion in Fife.

Staff will be on hand to guide visitors through the courts and down below, to the cells!

Guided tours half hourly, participation will be on a first come first served basis (restricted to 20 persons per tour).

Originally built as a prestigious private house in 1825, this 2-storey classical style villa overlooks the South Inch. The interior is largely original with moulded plasterwork in the principal rooms. The house was acquired in 2003 by Subud Britain, a registered charity.

Exhibitions will be on display by groups and individuals who currently use the Centre. Wheelchair access to ground floor only. Limited on-street parking, free on Sunday.

Perth Theatre

Perth Theatre - Image 1Situated on Perth High Street, the theatre’s projecting entranceway leads to a delightful Edwardian rococo auditorium, restored after a fire in 1924. Plans are now in place to refurbish the ornately decorated space and re-develop the building to make it suitable for modern productions. A new flexible studio auditorium, designed by internationally renowned architect Richard Murphy, is planned alongside the original.

An exhibition explaining the proposals will be on show and a presentation by the architect will be followed by guided tours in the afternoon. Presentation at 11.00 (ticketed but free), tours at 14.00, 15.00 and 16.00.

'Press Here' Workshop

Housed within a converted 19th-century workman’s cottage, stable and wagon-shed, the ‘Press Here’ Workshop still uses hand-set lead type for letterpress printing, the method first introduced by Androw Myllar to Scotland over 500 years ago.


Building Date: 19th century

Visitors will be able to try part of the printing process. A family day on Sunday will include activities such as paper making.

Scottish Hydro Pitlochry Visitor Centre

The architectural elements of this huge civil engineering scheme were designed by Harold Tarboulton in 1953 and comprise the most visible part of the vast Tummel Garry Hydro Electric scheme covering 750 square miles of central Perthshire.

The dam holds back the man-made Loch Faskally and has two massive gates, which control the water level.

Visitors can walk across the public footpath spanning the dam and see the turbine hall where the generators are housed. Last entry at 17.00.

Soutar House

Perth’s poet William Soutar lived at 27 Wilson Street from 1924 until his premature death in 1943. He wrote about Perth and its people through diaries, essays and criticism, but his great contribution to Scots literature was as a poet. Visit the room where he spent 13 years, bedridden by spinal illness, but still engaged in the world and writing prolifically.

More recently the building has been home to Perth and Kinross’ Writer in Residence.
