We are delighted to be able to offer members of the public the chance to visit more building across the city than ever before and we are sure there is something to suit every taste and interest. Fourteen of this year’s venues are new to the programme so this is the most in-depth Doors Open Days to take place in Dundee. Some of the tours fill up quickly so it is advisable to book in advance.

The event on the weekend 13th and 14th September gives you free access to over 40 remarkable buildings across Dundee.

Some open up once a year, some just once in a lifetime. Doors Open Days celebrates architecture, design, buildings, places and spaces right on your doorstep.

The Vine Georgian House - Image 1This curious house was built by George Duncan MP in memory of his late wife, Hester Eliza Wheeler, whose childhood home was the Vyne in Hampshire. He intended it to show off his extensive collection of paintings and objects of which he bequeathed to the town. Tours will include a visit around The Lord Doyle of Montague fine art exhibition.
Building Date: 1836
You will have the opportunity to view the ornate hall and the former drawing room and learn something of the house’s remarkable history. There will be tours of the grounds, giving a detailed history of a fascinating building coming back to its full use. There will be a unique opportunity to to see the Light Therapies in the rhythm Dome Marque.  There will also be cocktail making demonstrations taking place by Hard Rock Casino Las Vegas staff. Tea, Coffee and light refreshments will be available.

Explore the treasures of Dundee and access the fascinating material held by the University Archives. This talk and tour covers the jute industry, hospitals and asylums, church records, railways, photographs, maps and plans and local and family history.

The building itself is an early example of an office tower block by a nationally important architect, clad in timber and stone.

Come and see diaries, photographs, letters and other records relating to the history of Dundee and Tayside. Highlights include records of the jute industry in Dundee and India, material from hospitals and asylums and old photographs of Dundee. We have fascinating collections and are open to the public.

University of Dundee - Buildings of The Botanic Garden - Image 1Join us for a tour of the Macro Micro Studio, the first ‘off-grid’ entirely renewable energy powered building in the UK. Designed and constructed by a team of staff and students from both the Departments of Architecture & Planning, and Physics & Engineering.  The building combines ultra-low-energy construction practices to conserve heat with integrated and controlled technologies for generating, storing and exporting power.

The tour also will introduce you to the Botanic Garden and its iconic Visitor Centre designed by Dundee architect Jack Fulton, the Glasshouses and the outstanding drystane walls of the Garden of Evolution.

Following the tours, visitors will be able to walk around the Botanic Garden and see the buildings reflect their surroundings.

Come along and try your hand at being a dentist for the afternoon at Dundee’s very own Dental Hospital and School, recently rated No.1 in the UK.

Not only will you get to see what it’s like to train as a dentist there will also be tours of the building, which include rarely seen artwork by James McIntosh Patrick, elaborate staircases and fine stained-glass window by Douglas Strachan. This event is proud to be part of the Dental Hospital’s Centenary celebrations.

Drop in for tours around the building on the hour. Please arrive 10 minutes before the tour. Spaces are limited.

Tucked away behind Duncan of Jordanstone College, this charming 18th century farmhouse is now home to the stores and offices of the University’s Museum Services. Curator Matthew Jarron will give a guided tour round this listed building, revealing some of the University’s fascinating collections of art, science and natural history.

Originally built as Dundee Training College, this fine building (by T M Cappon, 1912-20) is now owned by the University of Dundee. Join law lecturer Robin White and museum curator Matthew Jarron for a tour of the School of Law (which boasts a fine collection of legal cartoons) and the newly refurbished Scrymgeour Hall, where portraits of past principals can be seen alongside fascinating stained glass.

Explore Dundee’s newest building and discover its unique architectural features with this first opportunity to tour the new Centre for Translational and Interdisciplinary Research (CTIR). Find out how the design of the building will help to enable innovation by breaking down barriers between scientific disciplines.

The new building incorporates a covered ‘street’ between the CTIR and the existing College buildings, a café and space for meeting, collaboration and networking as well as an art gallery, curated by Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD), to promote arts and science collaboration and host international and local exhibitions.
