Dundee:  22 September 2012 – 23 September 2012

Fire stations, factories, castles, churches, laboratories, libraries, pubs and pools are just some of the Dundee landmarks that will be participating. Across the city, hundreds of people will be granted access to fascinating buildings not normally open to the public as well as taking part in events, tours and talks for all ages.

St Peters Free Church is a classic 19th century building which dominates much of the West End.  It has recently been sensitively internally refurbished and is used as a conference centre, concert venue, art gallery, community facility as well as a place of worship.

Architect: Hean Brothers
Building Date: 1836
Coffee, tea and home baking.  Art display, book stall and opportunity to see some of the groups that use the church.

St Salvador's Church

St Salvador's Church - Image 1Visit the finest and most important Victorian Gothic Revival Church in Scotland. Admire the stunning lofty interior with painted and gilded reredos, beautiful polychromic stencilled walls and fine wrought iron choir screen.
Of great architectural significance, it was also important in the history of our city for its mission to the local jute working community.

Building Date: 1856
Information leaflets and guides will be available.
Sung Mass from 11.00 to 12.00 on Sunday – all are welcome to attend and see the church in action as Bodley intended.
Recent restoration project on the exterior, grant assisted by Historic Scotland and Heritage Lottery Fund, now completed.

St Stephens has an outstanding and extensive collection of almost fifty Edward Burne–Jones stained glass windows, which were manufactured by Will Morris and Co.  In particular, the windows depicting the stoning of St Stephen are exceptional in subject matter, scale and quality. The building also has many interesting architectural features.

Refreshments will be available during opening times on Doors Open Day

The building is open at 11.00 hrs for Morning Services on Sundays, when visitors are always warmly welcomed and you have the opportunity to experience the church and its building.

The Speedwell Bar

The Speedwell Bar is one of the few surviving pubs mentioned in the definitive 1983 book "People's Palaces, Victorian and Edwardian Pubs of Scotland". The Speedwell is one of the finest examples of an Edwardian Bar embracing all that was good in pub architecture at the beginning of the twentieth century.

The Vine

The Vine - Image 1This curious house was built by George Duncan MP in memory of his late wife, Hester Eliza Wheeler, whose childhood home was the Vyne in Hampshire. He intended it to show off his extensive collection of paintings and objects of vertu the finest of which he bequeathed to the town.
Building Date: 1836

You will have the opportunity to view the ornate hall and the former drawing room and learn something of the house’s remarkable history.

Access the fascinating material held by the University Archives. Head to the basement to see the biggest collection of textile records in Europe, Episcopal church and NHS Tayside archives, University records, and the Michael Peto photographic collection, amongst others.
The building itself is an early example of an office tower block by a nationally important architect, clad in timber and stone.

Come and see diaries, photographs, letters and other records relating to the history of Dundee and Tayside. Highlights include records of the jute industry in Dundee and India, material from hospitals and asylums and old photographs of Dundee. We have fascinating collections and are open to the public. Curator Matthew Jarron will give guided tours round this recently-listed house, revealing some of the University’s fascinating collections of art, science and natural history.
