St Mary's Parish Church - Image 1

St Mary’s was completed in 1914 to replace the Auld Kirk at the Cross.  Its impressive Gothic tower contrasts with the tapering spire of nearby St David’s.  It was designed by Messrs Clark & Bell of Glasgow and features modern stained glass by Kirkintilloch artist Willie Rodger.

Staff in attendance.

This year sees the 40th Anniversary of one of East Dunbartonshire’s most successful and loved events: the annual art exhibition. This competition and exhibition highlights the rich and diverse creative community within the area.  Many professional and enthusiastic amateurs from Kirkintilloch, Lenzie, Bishopbriggs and the Campsie area exhibit side by side.

The show is hosted by East Dunbartonshire Council and supported by local volunteers.

St Ninian's High School - Image 1The first St Ninian’s School had 75 pupils and was opened in January 1874  on Union Street, Kirkintilloch .  The school was extended and modernised to accommodate the increasing roll.  Children attended from the villages of Croy and Twechar, parts of Stirling shire as well as the town itself.

By the mid 1920s accommodation was again a major problem.  Westermains House on Bellfield Road and surrounding grounds were purchased and the new school opened in November 1931 with 1,060 pupils.  As part of the Council’s PPP Programme a brand new school opened in August 2009.

Wagtail Pet Shop - Image 1The shop is one of the last surviving weaver's workshops in Kirkintilloch. Until about 1900 looms for six weavers were accommodated here, with weavers' families living on the floor above. After the looms were removed the vacant space served many different purposes, successively a mission hall, a scout hall, a factory workshop, a store and a shop.
